I just figured out how to get sound working on a 64-bit windows 7 guest running under KVM within libvirt (whee!) and thought I’d share the solution. (“Hey, lazyweb, here’s an answer!”)

The “Intel HD Audio” or “hda” sound model in KVM is called “ich6” in libvirt (virt-manager and virsh edit). Even then it doesn’t seem to play sound in the virt-manager console, but when I then use rdesktop to the instance (which is what I do normally, because it gives much better performance) and use -r sound:local the sound plays properly through the rdesktop connection on my desktop.

Oh nice. thanks.

Hm, virt-manager really ought to be able to do rdesktop for itself.

Also, did you get the (signed) virtio drivers working?

Didn’t even try on the virtio drivers. I expect to even boot the guest once only a few times a week, and I’m not doing anything intensive in it, so it’s hard to get excited about fixing something that ain’t broke. :)
