My verizon galaxy SIII has an OTA available for it. Alas, it seems not to be Jelly Bean. Verizon says that in IMM76D.I535VRALHE “Enhanced Zooming Feature has been added to user interface for Web browsing, reading emails and more.” Is that an obfuscated way of saying “worked around yet another stupid Apple patent”?

My personal phone is a GSM Galaxy Nexus. None of the GSM carriers covers my office, and I’m not rooting my work phone; it’s not mine to root… ☺

It isn’t really a problem. I was just curious whether anyone knew what that curiously content-free phrase meant…

It appears based on experimentation that in email, at least, it means that in at least some circumstances, it reflows on pinch-zoom. I haven’t found that in web sites yet, but it does seem that pinch-in on full-screen brings up the tabflow and I don’t recall that happening before.

Try pinch-zoom, then a double-tap. That generally works for me in Android when there’s reflowing involved.

Michael K Johnson October 25, 2012 14:12

Yeah, I know about that. I’m just trying to figure out what’s different now. And I don’t think that pinch-zoom automatically reflowed in email before the update, but I can’t roll back to test.

Oh, in email? Awesome. Is that “Email” or “Gmail”? Because I haven’t had resizing in Gmail, and I know that’s a very new feature. (Perhaps they backported it?)

Michael K Johnson October 25, 2012 14:23

Email, as in the extra, touchwiz (what a name!) email app that talks nice to the corporate exchange server. I just tested, and Gmail doesn’t seem to have that feature.

Garrett LeSage October 25, 2012 14:28

Oh, interesting. I’ve heard Gmail is getting this feature (finally), in the new version. Some people already have access to it, but it has not been released for the public yet.

I wonder if the TouchWiz email app is based on the Google Email app (not Gmail, but the generic Email one). It’s so weird to have so many different “stock” email clients, depending on the phone and which email service one might be using. (Why can’t it be an excellent unified one?)
