The rumors (http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2012/12/google-reader-constantly-on-chopping.html) were true. Google Reader is going away.

http://feedly.com is not responding.

Coincidence?

A second spring of cleaning

newsblur.com is having trouble keeping up too

So is http://theoldreader.com/ and http://feedspot.com/

(The irony of posting this on G+ did not escape me. Nor did the irony of the thought “maybe we should have a Google Reader Refugee community on G+ to explore alternatives?”)

This brings to sharp relief the dependence we have on third party services. I may need to also explore bringing my calendar back in house.

Waiting for #googlereader to start trending on G+…

Michael K Johnson March 13, 2013 20:51

That didn’t take long, but people don’t like to type, so #Reader it is.

https://github.com/samuelclay means that newsblur doesn’t have to scale at googleplex scale to be a good choice.

So far, newsblur is the closest match for my reading style of all the options I have considered. I don’t want “magazine-style” layout. I want to scan quickly (sub-second scans for most posts), using keyboard commands on the web and swipe gestures on my android phones, reading in detail only the posts that interest me, and saving some to read later (especially reading later in a web viewer content that is less convenient to read on my phone).

I bought into newsblur, at the higher $36/year rate, to participate in giving Samuel Clay the financial capability to scale to handle the load.

Other than current performance limitations, my main problem with newsblur is that it’s not clear to me how to replace the “save for later” checkbox in Google Reader.
