The idea that any grade other than “A” is unacceptable is mind-boggling.

Vishal Verma

“We are drilling into their heads that success consists of jumping through a series of hoops to please authority. Of course, this is a valuable skill that everyone needs to learn, because hey, that’s part of life. But it is far from the only skill, and it is certainly not the most valuable one we could teach.”

How true..

This is what happens when GPA is allowed to matter more than what the numbers are an average of.

When I moved from Sweden to the USA they translated my grades according to a table that required the at the time highest Swedish grade of 5 to be an A. I was absolutely shocked when I found out how easy it was to get an A in comparison… much more like getting a Swedish 4.

So my GPA looked crappy compared to my friends.  Didn’t help me that some advanced classes gave a GPA bonus (which isn’t unreasonable) – of course none of the classes I took with me from Sweden did, even the ones where I was taking math two years ahead (and in Sweden at the time, calculus was required in grade 11-12, whereas here it was optional for grade 12.)
