An excellent video from Vi Hart, summarizing the current problem with last mile carrier monopoly and the FCC’s neutrality proposals.

If this seems like a reversal of my previous comments about Comcast and Netflix and peering agreements, that is in part because of the (hopefully temporary) bad-faith settlement between the two actually negotiated for now, and because of the FCC’s sudden readiness to greenlight this as good policy.

I would rather see a reversal of the monopoly stranglehold that regional broadband providers have, but failing that, applying common carrier status to those regional monopolies should address the risks to network neutrality.  It would not, of course, address the incentive to increase overall bandwidth to consumers.
