What is this “TV” of which you speak?

Jerry Mander was right in 1978.

I grew up without a TV; a great gift from my parents that I sometimes regret not giving to my children. We got one shortly after I started high school, and that only by accident; I won it in a contest. A writing contest.

+Michael K Johnson I had a similar upbringing, though we got a TV earlier.  It was small, black-and-white, and access pretty tightly controlled, mostly PBS.

I’ll admit that there’s some amazingly high quality writing in programs now, but still think it’s better not to have one at all, particularly attached to broadcast/cable.

I’ve recently read Mander’s book (above), and while a few points are dated, much of what he says continues to resonate.  The Prince EA spoken-word bit I posted earlier today touches on a couple of those points as well.
