We unplugged it and turned the pickle around, and the other end glowed; the glowing followed the electrode instead of being associated with one end of the pickle. I assume that this was due to the relative length of the electrodes. More experimentation is called for!

Interesting. I never understood the lines from “Mellow Yellow,” but now the ones about electrical banana make sense….  :)
