Ah, the refreshing smell of magic smoke. At least it didn’t fail subtly, so my mistake was nice and obvious: a puff of smoke and a tiny hole in the chip. Accidentally letting 15V above Vdd into an MCP6002 exceeds the absolute max of 1V above Vdd. (This hobby doesn’t reward carelessness; I can’t just drop into the debugger.)

I’m not a fan of the robot organizations that didn’t understand the context of my post. Also not super pleased with Google+ that blocking and muting them doesn’t make their plus-ones go away.

Surprisingly unrelated to the toasted MCP6002, I’m annoyed that the LD1117 series linear voltage regulators do not share a pinout with the 780x series. My only 3V3 linear regulator is an ST LD33V and switching from 5V with a 7805 to the LD33V was annoying. Glad I’m still in breadboard phase and didn’t fab a circuit board yet!

Ironically, the op amp that ended up with a small smoking crater was part of a safety feature. :-)
