I’ve been using this widget for a long time. They removed it in Firefox 58, promising something better later, though providing no details.

This is becoming typical. Why not wait for the replacement to be ready before removing the feature? Seems like “duh” to me.

Add the Firefox Search widget to your home screen | Firefox for Android Help

Update: In May 2019, about 16 months later, Firefox 67 re-introduced the replacement.

I have just stopped using widgets and addons in my browsers.. either the widget developer decides to silently drop support.. or the browser keeps changing what the developer needed so they give up and burn out. It seems like this would be the opportunity for commercial companies to step in, but the general consumer wants to pay nothing.

This was an internal built-in feature of Firefox on Android, not an extension. By installing Firefox on Android, you had the option to place an Android widget on your launcher as a core feature.

They just dropped the feature with no warning and without replacement.

Oh I never used firefox on Android so was thinking it was something else. My apologies for not researching clearly before posting.

Ah. Generally I have been super happy with Firefox on Android for several years. This just really annoyed me.
