Good bye Google+ — if you haven’t learned about Google takeout yet, maybe now is the time…

Project Strobe: Protecting your data, improving our third-party APIs, and sunsetting consumer Google+

Back to Twitter! …. errhm… wait….

Back to Facebook!…. errhm… dammit!!

Rick Troth October 08, 2018 16:00

Not gonna use “Strobe” in place of G+. It’s basically goodbye Googoo.

I feel like I’m cutting off my own knows, but Google is demonstrably not in interested in long term interests of individual users. They’re a business. True, they’ve done cool stuff and they’ve hired lots of FOSS and Internet luminaries. But they’re a business with a bottom line.

Where to go? MeWe? Gab? Diaspora? These will all eventually have the same problem as Google (plus or minus).

So then, see you all back on facebook??? (look for my posts hidden discretely between all the ads.)

Michael K Johnson October 08, 2018 16:23

I have successfully stayed off Facebook so far. Really not sure what I plan to do here. Actually use the Twitter handle I created solely to follow downtime in newsblur before I gave up on it and moved to this old reader? Give up and use Facebook after all? Not deciding today…

Curtis Olson October 08, 2018 16:35

My facebook is full of family and high school / college friends. I have a few techie friends that met over the years, but not all that many. So personal/family stuff and obvious jokes I post on facebook. Interesting techie stuff and extra clever jokes I tend to post here. But facebook is annoying because it is so full of ads and click-bait type ‘promoted’ content. But due to my age, everyone I care about is on facebook, and no one is really any other place. Maybe I’ll go back to mailing out real christmas letters once a year? Or just crawl back into my cave and work on something only I find interesting for the next 10 years?

Cristian Gafton October 08, 2018 16:36

I know, I know, I know!!!

LinkedIn!!! (checks security history…)

dammit!!!!

Curtis Olson October 08, 2018 16:38

Noooo!!!! linked in is 10x more annoying than facebook, and that is not easy to do!

Michael K Johnson October 08, 2018 18:04

Not sure whether pluspora.com is where I’ll end up, but I grabbed mcdanlj@pluspora.com for now…

Cristian Gafton October 08, 2018 18:32

Hmm…. scrappy startup getting right all the things that the hordes of engineers from Google and Facebook got wrong? Lemme dig for that bridge deed I had, I heard it is a great time to sell. :-)

Michael K Johnson October 08, 2018 18:55

I don’t think the engineers at Google have been the problem with Google+… :) And frankly engineers aren’t my beef with FB either but at least Facebook has invested in its platform which is more than you can credibly say WRT G+

AFAICT pluspora is just a diaspora pod. Last I knew of the diaspora code base, I’m not excited about running my own pod!

I have time to decide.

Michael K Johnson October 08, 2018 19:18

Mastodon’s 500-character limit makes it pretty much a non-starter for me. Friendica federates with both diaspora and mastodon, so maybe that’s interesting?

Friendica Directory

Michael K Johnson October 08, 2018 19:49

Friendica servers looks pretty sparsely populated.

Michael K Johnson October 08, 2018 20:17

at-mcdanlj-at-mastodon-dot-cloud (because thanks Google+ for obfuscating mastodon IDs‽) in case I want to use that… Try all the things?

Curtis Olson October 09, 2018 08:53

If someone did have a copy of all the 500,000+ user data here, we could just setup a work alike system and move along like not much happened … hypothetically of course.

Galen Johnson October 09, 2018 21:09

Feels a lot like “I’m going to take my ball and go home!”. I realize Google is a business but are they going to shut Google search down if they get caught with their pants down there? However, I guess it should have been obvious when the founders stopped using G+ years ago (unless that is fake news).
