It was enough of a pain to boot into windows to update firmware. I was pleased to see that there was an open-source program — http://code.google.com/p/gpsassist-update/ — to get GPS almanac data, but not so interested in buying a mac to run it on. Turns out it’s trivial, so I wrote a tiny shell script. Now my camera reports that it has valid GPS almanac data. Yay!
